Why the 1990s Premier League era is so collectible

When the Premier League launched in 1992, shirt design was in a golden age of creativity. Manufacturers like Umbro, Admiral, Adidas and Reebok competed to produce bold, distinctive designs for all 20 clubs. The result was a decade of visually striking shirts that now define an era of football.

Away shirts from the 1990s are particularly sought after. The Manchester United grey away shirt (1995-96), the Newcastle United brown away kit (1995-97) and the Coventry City sky blue away are examples of shirts that attract bidding wars on the vintage market.

Shirt sponsors from this era — Sharp (Man United), JVC (Arsenal), Holsten (Spurs), McEwan's Lager (Newcastle) — are now nostalgic icons that immediately identify the era a shirt is from.

The most collectible Premier League clubs

Arsenal — JVC-era Adidas and Nike kits from 1988-2000 are the most collected. The bruised banana away and Invincibles shirts are the crown jewels.

Manchester United — Sharp-sponsored Umbro kits from 1992-2000 dominate. The grey away and 1999 treble shirt are the most valuable.

Liverpool — Crown Paints and Candy era Umbro kits. The 2005 Istanbul Champions League shirt is the modern collector piece.

Chelsea — The early 1990s Umbro kits are increasingly collectible. The 1997-98 shirt worn by Zola and Di Matteo is particularly popular.

Newcastle United — Brown away shirt and black and white classics. The Andy Cole and Peter Beardsley era shirts are widely collected.

Leeds United — Early 1990s Umbro shirts from their title-winning era (1992) are some of the most collectible in the league.
