The most collectible era of Bundesliga shirts

German football and Adidas have been inseparable since the 1970s. The Three Stripes brand supplied Bayern Munich, Borussia Mönchengladbach and the German national team through their greatest years — and those shirts are now extremely rare collector pieces.

The 1980s Bundesliga produced some extraordinary shirt designs. Bold colours, sponsor logos from brands like Opel, Jägermeister (Eintracht Braunschweig — the first German club to have a shirt sponsor, in 1973) and Commodore computers now serve as time capsules of the era.

Borussia Dortmund's yellow and black shirts have been consistently popular with collectors, particularly from the 1990s when they won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and then the 1997 Champions League.

The most collectible Bundesliga clubs and shirts

Bayern Munich — 1970s European Cup winning shirts are the rarest and most valuable German football items. Opel-era Adidas kits from the 1980s-90s are the heart of most collections.

Borussia Dortmund — 1997 Champions League winning shirt (beating Juventus) is the most sought-after BVB jersey. 1990s Bundesliga title shirts are also popular.

Borussia Mönchengladbach — Their 1970s dominance (five Bundesliga titles, two UEFA Cups) produced extremely rare shirts with Jupp Heynckes and Berti Vogts.

Schalke 04 — 1970s and 1990s Schalke shirts are popular in Germany's collector market. Their distinctive royal blue makes them instantly recognisable.

Werder Bremen — 1988 UEFA Cup winners and multiple Bundesliga champions. Otto Rehhagel's Werder shirts from the late 1980s are collectible.
